Full moon day during Ashadha month is known as Guru Purnima day. Traditionally this day is reserved for Guru Puja or Guru Worship. On this day disciples offer Puja or pay respect to their Gurus. Guru refers to spiritual guide who enlighten disciples by his knowledge and teachings.
We have many festivals and many other days to celebrate like birthday’s,mother’s day and father’s day, in the same way Guru’s also have their own day called ‘Gurupurnima’.The anniversary of Veda Vyas is celebrated as Gurupurnima.On this day sanyasis do vrata,to stay in one place and for two months they teach.This day comes on beginning of the rainy season in India(august-september).

‘Guru’ has many meanings like teacher who teaches in school is called guru,one who is expert in business is called business guru,one who is expert in autmobile is called auto guru.Guru is also a human being,when praised however,’guru brahma guru vishnu guru devo maheshwarah’, means guru is Brahma,guru is Vishnu,guru is Shiva, but any human is not taken.but what is important is when we worship the God(murti) Dhakshinamurti.
On Gurupurnima day we take blessings of our guru’s in a traditional way and worship Dakshinamurti.The importance of this festival is beginning of universe where ‘Guru’ is considered as one among the important part in anyone’s life.This is dedicated to all the teachers.

Meaning:

“Gu” means darkness and “Ru” means which removes darkness in Sanskrit language,overall meaning of Guru is one who removes darkness.Each and everyone in their life learn new things and try to understand them is only because of Guru.Ever since, ages Guru is prayed equal to god.Among all the times Veda Vyas is biggest.

Significance:

In hindu mythology Guru is always treated as path layer.One best example is Eklavya,who on one command of his guru Dronacharya cut his thumb finger,in order to give guru dakshina.Thus,this incident shows us the relationship of guru and shishya.In Buddhism people pray to their God Gautham Buddha and belive that on this day Buddhism came into being,his teachings were thought to the people.

For Jainist this festival is more important as Mahavira made Gautham as his 1st deciple and turned as Guru.Hence, from then this day became very important to them.

Guru purnima is celebrated throughout with the same concept i.e., praising ‘Guru’ whether he might be Veda Vyas or Gautham Buddha or Lord Mahavira.People do meditation and sing songs and do bhajans in temples.
